Born in 1953, growing up in a small Missouri town, Maverick Chairman and CEO Steve Williams took his father’s lessons to heart and began a career in transportation. In 1975, he went to work for Steel Haulers. After they introduced structural changes and President Jimmy Carter signed the Motor Carrier Act of 1980, Williams seized the opportunity to move on and start his own company. With one truck, he co-founded Maverick Transportation with friend and co-worker Larry Leahy. Thousands of loads later and countless miles covered, Williams is now 100% owner of Maverick, running over 1,000 company owned trucks.
From the one room office in Texarkana, Arkansas, to the state-of-the-art Corporate Office in Little Rock, Arkansas, Williams and Maverick have earned a solid reputation that has led to the industry leadership they enjoy today. The Maverick name defines the goal that Williams set of becoming a different breed of trucking company - an individual in a crowd of carriers.
